Home in Winnipeg

Eyes shut, head tilted up towards the sky I opened my mouth and caught a snowflake on my tongue – as I savoured that moment it brought back all my memories growing up in Winnipeg, and our special family outings to Assiniboine Park.

Back then The Fork didn’t exist – at least not in its current form. Nope back then it was either hit the community club rink or if you were lucky; a trip to Assiniboine Park to skate on the duck pond followed by a Krazy Karpet down the hill by the Pavilion.

Those were the best winter excursions for a couple of reasons. First, you got to skate on a pond. Second, slipping and sliding down a hill iced and packed with Winnipeg snow on a Krazy Karpet is an experience unlike any other! Third, at the end of it all you got to go for a hot chocolate in the Pavilion – back in the day the Pavilion was a place where you could grab some typical concession grub, not the gourmet cuisine sold there today.

As I opened my eyes – the memories still fresh in my mind – I thought about how lucky I was to grow up in a city where even in the dead of winter life was a blast. And as I strolled hand in hand with my wife down the hoar frost covered treed paths in the park I truly was walking in a winter wonderland … in Winnipeg.
